It began as a joke.
It began as a joke.
Sarah Caffee had a dream that started as a joke around ten years ago. She told her friends and family that she one day hoped to start a food truck that was run by puppets. The puppets would be friendly during the day (Good Puppets) and snarky for the night crowds (Bad Puppets). Sarah was a high school principal at the time and enjoyed daydreaming of a slightly more whimsical career. Not only did Sarah not have time to open a food truck, there was another big flaw in her plan: Sarah despised cooking.
She did not, however, despise puppets. Sarah began making rudimentary sock puppets of recently deceased celebrities in 2018. Over time, her puppets improved and she enjoyed getting chuckles from friends and family who came over to her house and saw sock puppets hanging on a clothesline around her living room.
Sarah also loved improv comedy. She began taking improv classes in Phoenix, AZ in 2016 and was a cast member of a long-form improv troupe in Phoenix and later in Washington D.C, where she moved in 2018. Sarah believed that improv made her a better teacher, a better friend, and a better person. It lessened her anxiety and helped her listen more and exhibit more flexibility in her day to day life.
In late 2022, Sarah and her husband, Jordan, left their home in Washington D.C. to travel the country to find a new place to call home. They arrived in Duluth in April 2023. They were immediately captivated by Duluth's fun art scene and kind people. But what really led them to decide that Duluth would be their new home was attending Duluth's Magic Smelt Parade in May. It was whimsical and topical and filled with joy. A town where something like this could flourish was a town that Sarah and Jordan wanted to live in.
Sarah and Jordan made new friends easily in Duluth, and found that people were interesting and creative. Sarah started to share her love of puppets with her new friends, and they encouraged her. They made puppets with her and encouraged her to start performing. In 2025, Good Puppet Bad Puppet made their puppeteering debut at the Magic Smelt Parade, which made Sarah feel what attending a Taylor Swift concert must feel like to others. She was star-struck and honored to be the opening act for the cranky show in the Zeitgeist Teatro.
Throughout 2025, Good Puppet Bad Puppet performed at the Bienvenue Coffee Festival, the Duluth Creepmas Parade, Rubber Chicken Theater's New Year's Cluckin' Eve, and appeared on WDIO's The Lift. They also sold puppets and performed at Earth Rider Maker's Market, BB + Friends, Duluth Superior Pride, Downtown Duluth Days, and the SOLCA Cider Festival.
So what is Good Puppet Bad Puppet now if it's not a food truck? Good Puppet Bad Puppet is a group of artists and performers who like creating puppets, improvising, writing and performing puppet shows, leading workshops, and spreading joy to others. We use our backgrounds as educators, artists, and academics to bring joyful puppet performances to Northern Minnesota. We believe in using puppetry and improv to deepen connections between others and believe in resistance through joy.

Sarah Caffee
Sarah Caffee was an educator and school leader for 15 years. Throughout her career in education, she has seen the importance of play for both children, and adults. Sarah has also been performing long-form improv since 2016 with troupes in Arizona, Washington D.C. She also served as a board member of the Washington Improv Theater. Sarah is the founder of the puppet troupe, Good Puppet Bad Puppet. She loves how puppetry allows her to pursue her passions for teaching, crafting, and improv.

Jordan Haedtler
Jordan is a writer, researcher, and policy advocate based in Duluth, MN. He specializes in non-fiction writing, especially pieces that draw out lessons from history and parallels to contemporary events. He aims to create content that gives audiences an appreciation of the awe-inspiring history that surrounds us. Jordan also enjoys writing puppet shows that bring in local history or make relevant social commentary. He enjoys puppeteering, singing, reading tarot cards, and doing improv.
